Custom Minifigures & Collecting Minifigures
This is an increasingly popular hobby both amongst adults and children. You will find many a LEGO ® kit for sale on eBay minus its Minifigures, the minifigs having been plundered for the collection. eBay is usually the best place for the minifig addict to feed their addiction, have a look at our Minifigures category to see what is currently for sale on eBay. As with all things eBay, there are a few things to watch out for when buying Minifigures there. Firstly, is that rare minifig you are looking at a genuine one or a 'custom' - one that has been custom built by someone? Custom minifigs are readily available on eBay with many being excellently made. Many are not however. Not a problem if you are looking to buy a custom minifig, a big problem if you bought a custom thinking it was an original. Given the value of some minifigs, there is obviously an incentive for skulduggery on occasions, You have been warned!
Collecting custom Minifigures is a hobby in itself and again eBay is the place to look for these custom figures. Why would you want a custom minifig? Well, what if it is of your favourite Star Wars character but isn't available in an official form? Also, there is the interest of collecting something that no one else has, something unique. Many very professional looking custom Minifigures have been produced and are available on eBay. As examples, it is possible to buy many figures from the expanded Star Wars universe, such as Jedi Knights and Sith Lords of the Old Republic (Darth Revan, anyone?), Mandalorians – the list goes on, In addition to fully custom minifigs, many customisations are low key variations on existing Minifigures. For example, a Star Wars character with a different coloured lightsaber or different weapon, a cloak added and so on. As always with eBay, if buying a custom minifig, research your intended purchase thoroughly – the best guide being the picture – if there is no picture, you really should ask yourself why. Most producers of custom minifigs would be only too happy to show off their handiwork – so if there is no picture, maybe the quality of the work is not up to scratch? Don't be afraid to ask the seller for more pictures – they will probably happily oblige, especially for a minfig that is likely to achieve a high price.
